24 Engineering students from hyderabad feared wash away in beas river in himachal pradesh

On 8th June 2014 at least 24 students from an engineering college in Hyderabad feared drowned in the river Beas near Talhot village Himachal Pradesh ‘s Mandi district after large quantity of water released from Larji Reservoir on Sunday. The students for VNR Engineering College were on a tour of Himachal Pradesh and taking pictures on the bank of the river at Talhot when dam authorities opened the gates of the dam release water without prior warning.
According to the police, there were 61 people, including students and staff, who were on the their way to Manali in two college buses out of which 18 boys and 6 girls are feared to have drowned in the beas river on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, according to one of the witnesses -- Pratyusha, 23, a second year BTech student, the dam authorities had released water by opening the gates without warning leading to a flash flood and drowning most of the students. "Many of my friends were drowned," she said, adding that she had escaped as she was late in going down to join the team.

Rescue workers on Monday morning recovered five bodies from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, while the fate of 22 others washed away in the flooded Beas river is still not known, an official said.
