Delhi University professor arrested for maoist links

A Delhi University professor G N Saibaba has been arrested by Maharashtra police for alleged links by Maoists.The wheel-chair bound English professor was arrested in Delhi today by team from a Maharashtra’s Maoists affected Gadchiroli district.

The Delhi University professor has been arrested on charges of allegedly being a member of a banned terrorist organization (CPI-Maoist), providing logistics and helping in recruitment for the group, Kadam claimed.

The name of Saibaba cropped after the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University student Hemant Mishra who had claimed before the probe agencies that he was acting as a courier between the professor and Maoists holed up in Abujmad forests in Chhattisgarh, official sources said.

Saibaba’s wife Vasantha said, “When he did not reach home, I called him and the driver. Both didn’t take my calls. Around 3 pm, I got a call from someone who claimed to be from Gadchiroli police. He asked me if I was Saibaba’s wife and then said they had arrested him. When I asked why, the call was cut.”

Vasantha went to the Maurice Nagar police station where she was told that a team from Gadchiroli had come at 9 am. Saibaba, who teaches English at Ram Lal Anand College and is wheelchair-bound, is the deputy secretary of the Revolutionary Democratic Front.
